In Berlin I thought they did a fabulous job of the Reichstag, combining the modern with the old. Here in Munich they have been at it again, transforming an old stately building ruined by the effects of war.

Today it houses the Bavarian State Chancellery, with the central dome formerly housing a military museum. The original building was built in 1905. [source: Wikipedia)
The above image is taken from the edge of the Hofgarten, near where Lazy Summer Afternoon was taken. The park itself is very much worth a wander, a valuable green space in the heart of the city.

I trust you are enjoying this week’s German tour. ๐
The architecture is amazing. Thanks for sharing here (and I love the colours of the sky and grass) ๐

Thanks Diane, I love the way the old has been preserved and so well enhanced with a modern addition. Too often the old is brought down and a carbuncle replaces it. Glad you enjoyed. MM ๐

I find it meaningful that the Germans left the ravages of war in the stone there, a reminder of where they came from.

Totally agree. One of the best memorials that I remember is a ruined cathedral that has been left just as that – a ruin. Pretty sure it was in Cologne but it was many years ago so may be wrong. ๐

Perhaps you remember the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in Berlin….

I don’t remember the addition of a belfry (it says 1963) when I saw it various times between 1971-1972. I believe the Cologne cathedral was rebuilt.

Well it wasn’t the main cathedral in Cologne as that is impressive and was rebuilt. In actually taking time to delve furthe I have to bow to your knowledge – it must have been the Berlin one, still it was c.30 years ago that I visited that one…..at least I got the right country. … Thanks for the correction weggieboy and hope all is good with you, ๐๐
