The green of the grass, the celtic cross and the round tower, like that of Glendalough, make this a quintessentially Irish scene – well for me at least. This is Holy Island on Lough Derg, which is in the middle of the course of the River Shannon. It can be found in County Clare and is one of the most important monastic sights in all of Ireland. I’d fully recommend a visit.
All right, MM – you’ve done it again! Gray stone, blue sky, green grass of Ireland…and I could swear I saw a tiny purple bloom in the shadow of the wall to the right. [I’m smiling…]

I am sure somewhere there must be a trace. Thanks for commenting Theresa. MM 🍀

nice – I love the geometry here – so many geometric shapes/forms neatly together in one frame – thanks

When I came back to the picture I almost could not believe al that was captured in the single frame with no gimmicks to help. MM 🍀

I have never been there, shame on me. If I ever get a “bus pass” I will go to all the spots I have never been to 😉

No shame, but hopefully I may give you an idea or two.

Very intriguing composition of shapes – what was the purpose of the round tower?

No definitive answer but widely believed to have been used as a bell tower and a place of refuge. The doors tend to be a good few feet above ground with no steps, requiring a rope or other aid to gain entry. Hope this helps. I note there are two examples in Scotland and one in Isle of Man. Hope this helps. MM 🍀
PS I am no expert so stand to be corrected!

How right you are about the Irishness aspect! I was so, so sure it was Glendalough. Just have to visit this Co. Clare gem.

It is worth it, just a bit north of Killaloe up the Western shoreline. MM 🍀

Thanks. With lots of Co. Clare blood in me, I’ll grab any excuse to visit but this looks very special.
