The green of the grass, the celtic cross and the round tower, like that of Glendalough, make this a quintessentially Irish scene – well for me at least. This is Holy Island on Lough Derg, which is in the middle of the course of the River Shannon. It can be found in County Clare and is one of the most important monastic sights in all of Ireland. I’d fully recommend a visit.

Very intriguing composition of shapes – what was the purpose of the round tower?

No definitive answer but widely believed to have been used as a bell tower and a place of refuge. The doors tend to be a good few feet above ground with no steps, requiring a rope or other aid to gain entry. Hope this helps. I note there are two examples in Scotland and one in Isle of Man.
