It seems a long time ago but back in the year 2018 a trip was taken to Tanzania and the Island of Zanzibar. Now we can’t even go 5km. So let’s transport ourselves back to those halcyon days of travel through images that were taken on that trip.

The above header image is a close up of a section of the image below, which may help to explain its lower quality. It was taken in the heart of Stonetown, the main city of the island.

This shot helps to underline why it is a good idea to have a guide when passing through the streets of Stonetown; the buildings are tall and the alleyways are narrow and thus it is difficult to get a fix on any horizon or other object in order to verify one’s bearings. It would be all too easy to get lost in the labyrinth of alleyways.

Personally I love this kind of scene, a normal enough depiction of life with textures and colours thrown in to give a sense of a place.

So that you don’t make the same mistake that I made at outset, Zanzibar refers to the archipelago of islands off the coast of Tanzania consisting of two large islands (Pemba and Unguja) and many smaller islands. Unguja is the largest of the islands and where most people head, lazily calling the island Zanzibar. It has a long, sometimes dark, history but has much to offer the modern traveller.
