Poppies in a corn field, many dying

The Battle is Over – 100 years ago

Finally the Battle of the Somme draws to a close on 18th November 1916 after 141 days of bloodied fighting and attrition.

The casualties from both sides amounted to over a million during that period which saw an advance of just 6 miles along the 15 mile front. The battle also saw the introduction of the tank in warfare for the very first time, with mixed success.

For all those that fought in this bloody war.
