Career Crossroads III

As part of my homework for the next session I have been asked to identify 5 role models that I admire. Now I am not too sure where this is going to get me, but I dare say this is to underline the values that I hold in high esteem. On an initial list of 8 there is not one tycoon, there are no actors, no scientists or engineers. I actually thought hard about putting “the everyday person” on my list as to my mind there are so many unsung ‘heroes’ who simply get on with life, may have suffered terribly themselves and yet remain so positive. They may not stand out from the crowd as there are so many of them, but these are the people that I admire. To some extent I thought that was shirking the question, although it is how I feel. Anyway, among my considerations have been, in no particular order:

  • Nelson Mandela
  • David Attenborough
  • Bobby Robson
  • Freddie Mercury
  • Elsie Rowson
  • Daley Thompson
  • Mahatma Gandhi
  • Mother Teresa

(For those interested Elsie Rowson is an ‘adopted’ Gran)

So what is all that trying to say? That I like sport, try to act with dignity and am a humanitarian? So which career line does this take me, I see difficulties in trying to combine elements of Freddie with Gandhi. Suggestions on a postcard.

  1. I’m in a similar boat. I’ve been working for over 30 years (already?) but eight in the last job. I always exchanged “four quarters for a dollar” when fed up with the job I was at (alway doing more or less the same thing) and when this job came to an end (not sad, at all!) I decided to take my time, reflect on what I want to be when I grow up. Maybe I should relook at the package they gave me! I wonder if they are supplier more than a company to redo my resume….

    Best of luck to you!

    1. A couple of days after he died I did the London – Brighton cycle ride and a pub on the route called the Queen’s Head had changed its sign so that it was a silhouette of Freddie Mercury. That said it all, top performer and a real loss. RIP
