The sign at Ardrishaig states states 8½ miles to Crinan by way of canal, but most guides seem to suggest that the Crinan Canal is c.9 miles in length. The canal was built in 1801 and has a total of 15 locks.
The 8 to 9miles distance is nothing compared to the long arduous boat trip that was previously required around the Mull of Kintyre (the bit of Scotland that is almost tapping on the head of Ireland). Nowadays the most common craft are pleasure boats heading off to the isles.

I’m officially homesick now. Until we emigrated 19 months ago, we had lived in Lochgilphead for over ten years. I often walked along the Crinan Canal. Your photos are wonderful. If only the weather there was always that good.
