Glendalough – Monastic City

Glendalough is a much favoured tourist site and it is not hard to see why; history, culture and great scenery all in the one spot.

It was a pretty quick stop for us as we were on the way to Kildare Outlet Village (needless to say I wasn’t alone), but as we were passing we just had to stop. The parking was free, no entrance fee, sun shining, the only bugbear being that time was in short supply.

So here are a few snapshots of the famous monastic site, founded in the 6th century. Take a look at the main image of St. Kevin’s tower and the people on the pathway to put this monument into perspective.

While many walked on up the valley to take in the two loughs (lakes) we had to press on, but hopefully you have been given a taste of Glendalough, Ireland.

Enjoy your week. MM 🍀

  1. Gosh, I remember Glendalough, I visited this place back in 2004. Didn’t have a digital camera back then but thanks to your post, I’m reminiscing my visit 🙂

  2. Glendalough is such a wonderful place. I’ve been there a couple of years ago. Thank you for posting these photos, they bring back memories. Did you go on a hike in the mountains as well? The view over the lower and upper lake is just stunning.

    1. This time we just had a quick tour of just the monastic site and had to drive on. When living in Dublin I went to Glendalough a good number of times showing visitors around. On one occasion we hiked right over the moors in pouring rain and were rewarded with bemused deer and hazy views of the Loughs…😎

  3. 6th Century !!!!! Arggggg! Us Aussies think 1850 is really old. Amazing stonework tower, well all of it is amazing and I love the combination of celtic cross and the tower.

      1. We like to pretend amongst ourselves that we have culture but still run off overseas at any chance we get to see the real stuff. And yes our sense of humour is still off 🙂
