No, I am not referring to Guinness or Jameson’s, but the fuel traditionally used to heat the Irish fires and stoves – peat. Donkeys with baskets strapped to each side may be a distant memory for most, but the use of peat continues to heat the home and cook the dinner.
These images of peat are taken in Donegal where, just a short bit in from the coast, the cutting of the turf can be easily witnessed. Personally I love an open fire and the smell of peat – a guinness or a whisky thrown in isn’t too bad either.
For now I am glad to say that winter has long since passed and right now the weather really is giving us a summer to enjoy. Now where is that cold drink…..
