This is the entrance to Oldcourt House  which is listed as a protected building, but alas I am not sure what remains, other than a farm. Despite the notices on the gate and wall, this appears to be a popular place to park the car when going for a walk in Garryduff Woods.

Just inside the gates stands a boarded up lodge.

The track leads to a path which takes one into Garryduff Woods. The wood sits on the south eastern edge of Cork City by the suburb of Rochestown. Despite being so close to the city centre, the streams running through the mixed woodland give the sense of walking in the wilds on the side of a mountain. How to get away from it all and yet not really leave the city.

I will bring you more from this walk in the next fews days, but for now here are a couple more gate pictures.

    1. I see your point, breaking down here and faced with such an entranceway it might just be more tempting to go another way for help. Thanks for commenting Laura, always appreciated. MM 🍀

  1. The words “protected building” fire up my anger. We have lost many beautiful thatched cottages in Meath because they were listed. Once a building is listed it is doomed, because the restrictions on those attempting to restore it and make it a home are too fierce. We were lucky our 300 year old house was not spotted. We kept the outside as it was, new lime mortar put on, but the interior was modernized, along with solar panels and rain water system. We now have a comfortable beautiful home.
Sorry for ranting Mick but really, we lack common sense in a lot of ways here in Ireland.

    1. Maria, I am totally with you. Was down cleaning the quarry with a bunch of volunteers and someone said they were trying to do the same in their area but people didn’t want to know, didn’t want to come across as being weird by picking up litter. If true, I struggle with this. 🍀

      1. You have my sympathy as I spent an hour this morning picking up rubbish along the side of our road, neighbors don’t seem to see it but the sack I collected along the 80 meter stretch says it all. I’m thinking of broaching the County Council about it but don’t think I’ll get very far. So much for paying property tax etc..
